Family 332
Monique spent years hiding the abuse she endured behind closed doors, trying to shield her children even as they learned to stay quiet out of fear. The night he turned on them, she realized staying meant real danger. When he finally passed out, she grabbed her children and a backpack and ran, terrified but determined to keep them alive. Their first night in a shelter was filled with shaking hands and whispered reassurances, and Monique pushed herself through reports, interviews, and court orders, choosing her children’s safety over her own silence.
Rebuilding has been slow and difficult. The children still battle nightmares and the lingering fear that he might find them, but they are healing. They sleep through the night now and no longer flinch at every sound. Monique is exhausted and still recovering, yet she saved her children and is rebuilding their lives from the ground up. She now works in counseling and continues to piece together a safer future because she refused to let violence shape their lives. I nominate Monique for her strength in breaking the cycle, protecting her children, and creating a new life defined by safety, resilience, and hope.
