Crystal’s world changed in a single night when a fast-moving fire tore through her home. She woke to smoke filling the hallway and barely had time to grab the baby as her five children screamed and cried in the dark. Her husband and mother fought through the flames to reach the children, breaking windows and guiding them out. With their help, Crystal got the kids to safety. The last thing she saw was her husband turning back for her mother. Neither of them made it out, but their courage saved the children’s lives.

In the days that followed, Crystal and the children were left with nothing but grief and the clothes on their backs. They are now staying with her sister while waiting for a new home, and Crystal is trying to comfort five traumatized children while coping with the loss of the two people she loved most. The family hopes to start a garden again in honor of their grandmother and create a small memorial for their father.
